Deep Thoughts
Things are getting pretty hectic around here. I’m a few days away from finishing up my college career. It really hasn’t set it yet that I’m almost done. Without waxing too nostalgic, let me say that wow, the last four years have flown by.
I’m trying to wrap up one last project. For the record, trying to write a group CS project with three people each writing three different programs that have to communicate together nicely is not easy. I’m killing time, waiting for my other group members. I’m also really hopped up on caffeine (thanks, Jensi!) so I thought I’d put down some thoughts.
1. Gasoline: Gas finally hit the $3 mark here in WI and was even higher on the coasts. Everyone is freaking out and journalists everywhere are using this as a really easy article subject. Republicans in congress tried to pacify the electorate with a $100 rebate (fortunately they regained some shred of sanity and gave up on the measure) and everyone is looking for someone to blame. The truth is, $3 gasoline is the best thing we could hope for (short of $4 gas. Or $5.) The market isn’t going to move past cheap oil until it’s not cheap anymore. We have the technology to vastly improve gas mileage, we have gasoline alternatives, and who knows–we just might start living in communities that don’t require driving everywhere. Now we have some incentive to actually implement these alternatives.
As much as it hurts our pocketbooks at the pump, expensive gas is a Good Thing. Pat yourself next time you fill up and think of all the positive signals you’re sending to the market. Job well done!
2. Colbert: For those of you who don’t read the internet every day, you might not have heard about Stephen Colbert’s blistering roast of the president (and friends) at the Whitehouse Pres Correspondent’s Dinner last weekend. He had the gumption to say what we all whine about in private
