Creative use of stop-action photography
Here’s a really interesting use of stop-action photography for a music video. I really like this because the production cost is extremely low but the end result is top notch.

Great example of data design
Nicholas Feltron is a graphic designer who publishes personal annual reports. While the data therein is interesting enough, what I really like is the presentation. It reminds me somewhat of a good infoporn section from WIRED magazine.
Another classic example of thoughtful data presentation is Charles Minard’s map of Napoleon’s ill-fated invasion of Russia in 1812. He artfully combines the size of the army, the temperature, and basic geography of the invasion and subsequent retreat. Splendid design!

Why did it take me this long?
I stumbled upon an app today that made me ask myself “why did it take me this long to find this?”. The app is called DeskLickr (a clear abuse of the absent-penultimate vowel trend).
It does one thing, but it does that very well: populate your Mac’s desktop with photos from Flickr. It has a simple preferences interface to choose what you want to see and a menu-bar item for fine-toothed control. I set it up to look for the latest Flickr photos with a high “interestingness” rating and change every hour.
It’s free, it’s simple, and it nourishes your soul by bringing interesting photographs to your desktop. If you have a mac, you should try this out. (If you run Windows, I’m sure there’s similar software for you. But seriously, this is 2009–why are you still on Windows?)
